In the market, we have encountered many devices (gadgets) that has brought wireless technology. Among them are laptops, netbooks, tablet computers, a printer, or a smartphone (see example below a few gadgets that support wireless technology). Between these devices can communicate with each other wirelessly because those devices have been using the same language (protocol) to communicate. The protocol is Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is short for Wireless Fidelity, is a set of standards used for wireless local networks. IEEE sets standard for Wi-Fi communication with the number 802.11. IEEE 802.11 is a set of physical layer standards for implementing wireless local area network (WLAN) computer communication in the 2.4, 3.6, 5 and 60 GHz frequency bands. Wi-Fi technology uses unlicensed frequency spectrum (e.g. frequency of 2.4 GHz). This is different from the frequency spectrum used for mobile phones, TV, radio FM, or AM radio that has a license. In Indonesia, people are free to use the 2.4 GHz frequency for communication equipment. Below is the 802.11 family of standards which developed to address various aspects of WLAN requirements. (ss)
