Based on Wikipedia’s definition, a mobile operating system, or mobile OS, is the operating system that operates a smartphone, tablet, PDA, or other digital mobile devices. Modern mobile operating systems combine the features of a personal computer operating system with touchscreen, cellular, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS mobile navigation, camera, video camera, speech recognition, voice recorder,music player, personal digital assistant (PDA) and other features.
The most common mobile operating systems are:
1. Free and Open Source: Android from Google Inc., Linux based operating system, Symbian OS from Nokia and Accenture (open public license).
2. Close Source and Proprietary: Bada from Samsung Electronics, BlackBerry OS from BlackBerry, iOS from Apple Inc., S40 (Series40) from Nokia, Windows Phone from Microsoft.
It is a common occurrence when we see people in Indonesia or other country carrying two pieces of mobile phones, one smart phone (blackberry/android/iOS/Windows Phone/Linux) and 1 non-smart phone (even the author is now carrying 2 pieces of mobile phones )
Android, the open source OS, allows the software to be freely modified and distributed by device manufacturers, wireless carriers and enthusiast developers. In the quarter IV/2012 (October-December 2012), Android managed to capture market share of smart phone operating system with the highest global market share 70.1%. In IV/2011 quarter, Android's market share is also a ruler smart phone operating system with 52.9% market share.
Based on research from IDC's Mobile Phone, the order ruling operating system market share in the global smart phone in the quarter IV/2012 are as follows:
1. Android shipped as many as 159.8 million smart phone operating system with market share of 70.1%.
2. iOS shipped as many as 47.8 million smart phone operating system with market share of 21%.
3. BlackBerry shipments recorded as many as 7.4 million smart phone operating system with a market share of 3.2%.
4. Windows Phone shipments recorded as many as 6 million smart phone operating system with a market share of 2.6%.
5. Linux shipments recorded as many as 3.8 million smart phone operating system with a market share of 1.7%.
